ANDREW LOOMIS LIVES!

Well, once again we have the promise of somebody finally getting one of the classic Andrew Loomis books back into print. Amazon has listed FIGURE DRAWING FOR ALL IT'S WORTH as a 2011 publication. Yahooo!
Last year someone was planning on releasing CREATIVE ILLUSTRATION but it never happened, and I feel that this one is a more timeless choice.
I have all of the Loomis books but still I have long felt that it was a crime that his books were not available outside of the pirate pdf versions you can find online.
So this is your mission for 2011, go order this so the gods of art books will shine down and get it printed this time and maybe his other books will follow to inspire a new generation of 'drawers" ! Let's raise the bar folks, we do not need another "how to draw manga...or fairies...or whatever book in our local bookstore, but we do need to see this one!

Holiday Turtles

As most fans unfortunately know, I only take on TMNT group shot commissions on VERY rare occassions. This time I agreed and my Grinch heart grew 7 times because it was to be given as a Christmas present. Well I hear that it's new owner is very happy with it so hopefully I made some points with Santa....gotta stay on the 'nice' list you know ;)

Black Cat Commission

Black Cat is definitely way up there on my most frequently requested commish list, not quite sure why but I can't complain. I got this commission at the New York Comic Con but I dragged my feet getting it done because other work kept interrupting me. But, here she is finally. 11x17 Ink and gray copic markers on gray paper with a little white paint for highlights.

As expected, I had a blast at the con. I met a ton of great folks and soaked up as much comicy goodness to keep my art batteries charged for a while to come. Here is some of the art I did and some of the folks I met...good times ;)

I realized that I never posted my new sketchbook GIRLS I LIKE for sale here after I premiered it at Comic Con....so here you go. Girlie card pencils

I seldom have my act together enough to remember to scan my pencils before inks and colors, but this time I did! Here are the pencils for a bunch of the P'ups cards that I did. I've said it before, I don't think that it is easy to draw this small, but it is challenging.

Pin up pals and Dr. Sketchy

It's been a banner week here at Dooney Studios Inc. First of all I had a great visit from Pixar artist and pin up master Bill Presing and his talented wife Ikumi Moriya. Even though we had never met in person before, we all got along great. Man they are nice, I wanted to keep 'em.
Then last night I attended my first ever Dr.Sketchy's drawing session. It was a lot of fun, but I gotta admit that the drawing conditions were terrible. Okay, so I knew that it was happening in a bar but I just figgered that they would turn on the lights so we could see what we were drawing...uh, no. So I was drawing in the dark the whole time...literally, sheesh.
I won one of the drawing contests and in typical Dr. Sketchy fashion, the prize was a brand new fancy vibrator...oh brother, I traded it for a beer ;)

This is one of the commissions that I got at Comic Con that I couldn't get to, so I finished it up at home. I've been trying copics on all kinds of paper to see what works best...this one is on strathmore bristol board, and it worked really well.

P'ups sketchcards

I did a bunch of sketchcards for 5finity's P'ups set, a lot of them featured Dean Yeagle's Mandy character which was fine by me since she is so fun to draw.

Well Comic Con was crazy fun as usual. What can I say besides the fact that it gets bigger every year. This year some of the events spilled over into the near by Marriott and Hilton hotels because they just ran out of room. I was busy drawing the whole time so I didn't get too much walking around time. Lots of schwag out there this year though, if you were willing to stand on lines or were in the right place at the right time, you got some really cool tote bags, tee shirts etc. There were tons of folks in costume, which you know I love to see, it's all about the fun dudes ;)

San Diego time again

Raph step by step

One of the things that I've been playing around with recently is drawing on some kind of colored background. I swirl some color onto the paper, let it dry then draw and paint on top of that. When it works, it makes for some interesting effects. This is kind of small, like 4x5 inches. Ink, watercolor and colored pencils too!

Sometimes when I have a camera handy I like to take some quick shots while I'm working on a piece. It's interesting to look back at these after I'm done. One thing that always surprises me is how sloppy I am until the very end ;)

Black Cat in color

Black Cat is always a fave. I did this to try out some Holbien watercolors that I got in San Diego last year, they are nice paints, full of color. This one is kind of small...like 4x6 inches.
This is one of the few color pieces that I brought with me to Heroes Con.

Heroes Con Print Sale

I've got a handful of the Pizza Box prints I made for Heroes Con left, so if you wanna grab one, here's your last chance. I made less than 50 of them so when they're gone, that's it.

That's Dejah with an "H" pal!

One of the important things I learned this weekend was that it's "DejaH Thoris" not "DejA Thoris" !!! Even though I've read the first few ERB Mars books, for some reason I had it in my head that it was Deja...like Deja vu I guess. Luckily I was set straight, and was able to squeeze in the "H" on the two pieces I did at the con...whew! But I took the picks before I fixed the spelling....d'oh!
I was referring to this as my 'bait' drawing at the con, since I kept it on the table and people kept asking about sketches ;)

Back from Heroes 2010!

Heroes Con was a blast this year. I thought that I was busy when I went to the con in 2008, but this year was even better. I had tons of fun hanging and talking and drawing every day. I even took some time off from drawing at my table to go and watch Adam Hughes draw...a-mazing!
I donated a piece to the Art Auction and was glad that I wasn't embarrassed by what it went for ($275). But the best part was seeing it carried around the huge room by the most beautiful of the four Zatanna's that were working the auction floor ;)
Oh yeah, I wanna go back next year.

Death watercolor

A small watercolor of Death 8.5x11 on off white paper. I don't really like most watercolor papers so I'm continually practicing on different kinds of paper stock. This stuff worked pretty well.

Sketches for Heroes Con

I always like to have some drawings already done to sell at cons because I can only draw so many there. I've found that most of the commissions that I get at shows are for girls but most of the sketches I sell that are already done are Turtles...weird. So I don't bring too many girls, but I've got a bunch of Turtles.
I drew a bunch of these on boxes that I cut up which had my Turtle art printed on the back. I think that they were shoe boxes from the UK or something that I got at the studio. But they look like oversized collector cards or something with that printed back, kind of cool.

Heroes con here I come

I'll be attending Heroes Con June 4-6 so come by my artist alley spot AA-330 to say hey!
This is what my brand spankin' new banner looks like, so I should be easy to find.

Vampy sees red!

I like drawing on colored paper, but red is kind of hard on the eyes I think. Vampirella is my go-to girl whenever I just want to draw and not fuss with costume reference etc. Black marker and white paint....kind of big 11x17.

The Dark Turtle Returns!

Just for the sake of variety, and to maintain my sanity at comic shows, I often do themed Turtle sketches, the Batman-Turtle has always been a popular one. I did this while gearing up for Heroes con next week. Ink and gray markers with some watercolor in the sky.

Ahsoka

Some of my buddies tell me that the Star Wars tv show is actually good but I just can't warm up to it. I've tried a few episodes, and I should like it, but the character design and the overall grungy color of the show just leaves me cold. Anyhoo, here's a huge Ahsoka commission drawing I did. While I do my share of 11x17 commissions, they are usually full figure so the head is still kind of small...not this time! Big honkin' head drawing! It was kind of fun to draw big for a change.

Babes and pups!

Girls and dogs are two of my favorite things in the world, so it made sense that I should do some original sketchcards for 5finity's upcoming P'ups: Pin-ups & Puppies featuring Mandy and Skoots. I did 20 full color cards this time, about half of those featuring Mandy. I had fun with the previous Mandy set, so I was glad to get the chance to do some more with her. I'll show more of the cards once they've been released.

Pizza Time!

Okay, I'll admit that this is one of my wackiest ideas yet...drawing on a pizza box, but I had fun with it and it made me chuckle. The Turtle/Pizza connection can not be denied!

Flame on!

Check out this cool online painting application called Flame . If you ever wanted to paint with fire or smoke, this is the app for you! I haven't figgered out how to save the files in a large format but I can see that this would be useful for effects and textures in photoshop, and heck it's fun! The creator has a bunch of other painting programs as well.

Last of the Turtle cards...for now

Here's the latest batch of TMNT sketchcards I've got on ebay this week. I'm taking a break from these for a while after this batch..don't get me wrong, they are fun to do, I just should be concentrating on other stuff right now.

A Queen and a Joe!

A couple of pencil commissions I did recently. I can be a kind of messy penciler so it's challenging to do a clean drawing of an all white character like the White Queen.
I have basically zero knowledge of GiJoe, beyond knowing that the Baroness looks good in glasses ;) I did kind of like the movie though.
