Mikey Ghostbuster 1887

Sometimes worlds collide...this time a lot of them did. I've drawn a lot of Turtles, and a bunch of 1887 pieces, someone commissioned me to draw Michelangelo as a Ghostbuster in 1887 theme...whew.

Nick Fury never looked like this when I was a kid

I always forget to post art after it is printed. Here's a cover I did for a Zenescope NYCC exclusive. It was a Nick Fury cosplay variant, so I  wanted to do a Jim S teranko style background like this but they decided against it, ah well.

On the look out

Our girl with another of her alien buddies. There is a lot a freedom in character design when you are drawing characters that you know you probably won't have to ever draw again ;)

Witchy, it's Inkvember!

I figgered I'd keep the ink going even though Inktober is over. Maybe I will put together a little book of these.

Sister of Snakes Inktober #20

I know that I haven't kept to the daily posts for all of October, but I've gotten further along that I thought I would have, so 20 seems like a milestone to me ;)

Catgirl Space pilot inktober 2017 #7

I don't usually have any idea what to draw when I sit down to do these so I have no idea where this one came from ;) I'm liking the Micron PN pen, it has the properties of a pen and a small brush pen which works great when you are drawing small (4x5) like this.

just a girl with her creature

I've had a story rattling around in my head for years about a young girl orphaned on a distant planet but she gets along really well with the scary looking natives.

inky girl

October is the month of inks so I'll do some...not likely everyday though ;) I thought that maybe I'd be more likely to do these if I drew them small, so this is about 5x8 inches. And before you ask, I just like to make up characters and give them names for fun.

Watercolor play time

I think that a lot of comic artists like to dabble with watercolors because they are a quick way to bring a line drawing to life and they don't have the steep learning curve that a lot of other painting media have.
I drew this quick sketch with a red Colerase pencil and colored it using a small Sakura Koi watercolor set and water brush I have. The pigments in this set are surprisingly vibrant for a pan watercolor set so you can get nice rich colors or thin pale washes depending on how you layer the color and how much water you add. This small compact travel set up is really made for painting outside I guess, but in my case it is super handy for taking to coffee shops and comic cons ;)

Eraser testing time ;)

It's funny, I see a lot of product reviews out there for high end gadgets and such but not too much for more humble stuff...case in point art erasers!
The folks at Sakura who make the Micron pens that a lot of us comic types use, gave me some of their SumoGrip erasers to test drive at San Diego Comic Con this year. I put them to the test that weekend and have been using them since and have to say I like them. They seem to be a bit stiffer than most erasers which works well for me in erasing detailed areas. I sometimes even cut the tip of an eraser to specific shape to get into a small area...yeah I know, weird.

Most comic artists just want a couple of things from an eraser. First to get the paper clean and second to not fade the black ink line when we go to erase the pencil marks on an ink illustration. A lot of erasers are pretty tough on the ink line and after erasing you end up with a grayer line than you want. Sometimes you even have to go back in and touch things up. I for one, don't fill in the solid black areas until after I've erased the line art so the black will stay nice and black for this very reason.
I am happy to say that this eraser does both jobs well.
They come in a bunch of different shapes and sizes and I have found the refillable pen holder model to be super handy, and I keep it with me with my traveling art supplies.
Oh yeah, and they're black which is bad ass ;)

Check them out the next time you are in an art store or you can order them online.

Black Sable Zenescope cover and 25% off comics !

This is a store exclusive cover for Great Find Comics that I did for a new Zenescope space pirate comic called Black Sable. The funny thing is that the book was called something else when I drew the cover originally ;)
The store gave me this discount code "Dooney25" to pass along that will give you 25% off your entire comic order on this or any other stuff in the store, so check them out here
The uber talented Ula Mos colored this one for me.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Boston Comic Con.

I am not sure that many people actually look at blogs any more but I've been reminded that I haven't mentioned that I will be attending Boston Comic Con in August...so here you go, I will be there. It is actually the only other con I am confirmed to be at this  year. Come by and say hey and if you want to set up a pre-con commish to pick up at the show, just drop me  a line. Since I am on a watercolor kick lately I am even doing some watercolor commishes if folks are interested.

I guess I am going to SDCC 2017

Whew, I just got a last minute invite for a spot in Artist Alley at Comic Con, so I will be heading to San Diego after all. Time is tight so if you wanted to set up a precon commish let me know asap as I scramble through the SDCC paperwork and travel plans ;)

Con art

Here are some of the pieces I did for Heroes Con. I had the urge to do some watercolor pieces and now I definitely want to do more. The big Phoenix is my piece for the Heroes Con auction, so it could be yours ;)

Heroes pre-con sketch list

Just a reminder if you wanted to set up a commission to pick up at Heroes Con, there is still time to get on the  ol' pre-con sketch list.

A COUPLE OF CONS I WILL BE ATTENDING IN MAY AND JUNE

If you were waiting for me to open my commission list for Megacon or Heroes con, consider it done. I will be drawing at both shows as usual, but I always encourage folks who know what they want to get on my pre-con list and you can just pick up the art at the show...this takes some of the drawing stress off the weekend since I can only draw so much at a con with all of the craziness. Drop me a line for details if you are interested.

X-23 vs. Free comic book day ;)

My local comic shop is doing some kind of auction of blank covers during Free Comic Book day so I thought I would join in. www.facebook.com/comicsnmoreea…

I forgot to mention here that I will be attending C2E2 as usual this year....so if anyone want to get on my pre-con commish list, drop me a line for details, thanks.

Harley 1887 commish

I think that this may have been my first 1887 themed piece I did this year.
After I post things, I often get messages asking if I do commissions, the short answer is yes, when I have time. I can send details on options and costs etc  if you drop me your email. Here's a hint, the 1887 pieces often move up to the top of my to-do list since I like doing them ;)

New drawing for old art ;)

I got an email from a guy who bought a batch of old indy comic art at a thrift store, including one of my pages from my Gizmo series way back when. Out of nostalgia, I offered to buy it or do him a ninja turtle drawing that would be worth a lot more than a Gizmo page ;) in exchange (he was a TMNT fan) and he said he loved Fugitoid  so I did this extra shiny piece for him. One thing that made me smile was the original price I had written on the back of the Gizmo page was $35...ah, simpler times ;)
