Slave girl...

Sometimes folks have me draw characters that they have created themselves. I honestly don't remember anything about this one, my file says "slave girl" so I guess that what she is. Drawing someone else's characters can be a real nightmare sometimes....like when they send me a couple of pages of description, ugh. But, most are usually open to my interpretation, and more often than not they usually already have sketches done by other artists that I can use for costume reference. In this case I just winged it ;) I think that the only important thing to the creator was the hair and her tattoo and the rest I just made up.

GI who???

Here's an example of a character that I had never heard of before...Zaranna, from GI Joe. I did my homework and found some images of her online all terrible by the way ;) I still don't know anything about her, but she seems to like to shoot and blow stuff up.

The process...

Since you never can tell what you're going to get when you commission a sketch, I've developed a routine that hopefully keeps everybody happy. I do two quick rough sketches and the buyer pics the one he likes better and that's the pose I go with for the final drawing. Every once in a while they can't decide and I get to do both;)
Hey if you ever see me at a con, I usually have a folder full of these roughs for like $5 each...I've got a lot ot them!

I was a big fan of the Defenders book way back in the Sal Buscema days so of course I love Valkyrie!

Here's an example of the blue pencil rendering technique I was talking about. This one was 11x14 I think. I work anywhere from 8.5x11 up to a full 11x17 comic page size depending on what folks want. At cons I usually draw on 9x12 paper just to keep it easier to work with at the table.

Hey gang, the purpose of this blog is to show some of the comic book sketch commissions that I do in between my "real" work. I get a kick out of doing these drawings especially when I am familiar with the character and since I started reading comics in the '70's I know a lot of 'em!
I'll be posting sketches of characters from the golden age to the present.
I post ebay sketch auctions from time to time, do sketches at comic shows and folks contact me directly as well.
Most of these are done on bristol board in pencil or sometimes in dark blue pencil which gives kind of a cool artsy look. ;)
